The client proposed transforming his countryside villa in Colombia into a weekend retreat that could be rented by multiple individuals or families. The scope of this study included adding shading to the main villa, incorporating a pool, and designing small rental cottages.
This project is a preliminary three-day study intended to help the client estimate an approximate budget and begin translating his ideas into built form. As an early design exploration, it leaves significant room for refinement and further development.
Pool and Shading Additions
There are no sun shading devices stopping the sun in the dining and kitchen spaces, especially during the afternoon; to address this, some wooden members have been added, making them seem as if they were an extension of the existing roof structure.
Additionally, an infinity pool has been added, overlooking the cabins and the landscape.
A line of trees separates the main villa (semi-private) from the pool (public).
Cottage Design
The cottages are inspired by local vernacular architecture with a modern twist. The clay roof tiles, white-painted adobe, and rock textures (such as the bathroom floor) are examples of this.
The cottages sit on a platform as a symbol of respect for nature. Big windows frame the beautiful landscape and trees, the tilted roof with added clerestory maximizes daylight, and the open shower takes advantage of the warm weather and connection to the nature around it.
